J. Miesler Publisher

The German publishing firm J. Miesler was founded in 1876 as a supplier of high-quality paper and a publisher of calendars, posters and greeting cards. The firm used the chromolithography method in its work .

The company was located in Berlin at the following addresses: Neanderstrasse 37, Schmidtstrasse 8a, from 1898 until bankruptcy in 1904 at Luisen Ufer 30. In 1892, the company had 70 employees, at the turn of the century - more than 100.

There is not much information about the company's history. It is believed that its founder, Johannes Miesler, was sending out hand-drawn humorous greeting cards by mail as early as the 1870s. In any case, Miesler was one of the pioneers in printing postcards . Moreover, he is credited with "inventing" the "Grüss aus..." type of postcard .

J. Mizler (not always directly) exported his printed products to the USA. In particular, postcards printed by the company were supplied to California via the Saxon intermediary Brueck & Sohn from Meissen.

On October 1, 1896, Miesler's chief lithographer, Paul Grasnick, left the company and nine months later founded Finkenrath & Grasnick. This partnership did not last very long, and after the split, Paul Finkenrath founded his own company, PFB. Grasnick also began his own printing business.

Grasnik's departure had a negative impact on the activities of the J. Mizler company, and despite the fact that in 1902 Mizler acquired a new partner, David Hermann, the company went bankrupt in 1904.

Johannes Miesler himself died in 1905 at the age of 55.

Usually, the postcards issued by J. Mizler have the full name of the company printed on them.
